Transport is looking for a proactive System Engineer to join our London-based infrastructure team. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for delivering patch management services, installing updates, and maintaining systems across our enterprise environment. The position involves customer-facing work, requiring you to operate from our London office, provide remote support, and conduct on-site visits to Network Rail and TfL locations across Greater London and the surrounding areas.
What You'll Do
- Plan, test, schedule, and deploy patches, updates, service packs, upgrades, and hotfixes.
- Manage structured patch cycles, including monthly, emergency, and zero-day response.
- Perform pre-deployment and post-implementation testing and validation.
- Maintain patch compliance reporting and remediation tracking.
- Ensure minimal disruption to production systems during updates.
- Perform updates to various Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, and Red Hat.
- Perform updates to Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) and Windows 10/11 environments.
- Configure and administer WSUS.
- Deploy firmware updates for Cisco routers and switches, Cisco firewalls, and Juniper firewalls.
- Perform configuration backups and validation before changes.
- Assist with vulnerability remediation and security audits.
- Manage patching and lifecycle updates for VMware environments.
- Maintain and upgrade VMware ESXi hosts and vCenter.
- Ensure VM availability during maintenance cycles.
- Deliver on-site patching and maintenance at customer locations.
- Provide clear communication before, during, and after maintenance windows.
- Produce change documentation and implementation reports.
- Work within ITIL change control processes.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years’ experience in infrastructure or systems engineering roles.
- Experience delivering structured patch management processes.
- Knowledge of change management and maintenance windows.
- Excellent troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
- Strong hands-on experience with Windows Server & Windows Workstation environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with Linux Operating Systems.
- Strong hands-on experience with WSUS administration.
- Strong hands-on experience with Cisco routers & switches.
- Strong hands-on experience with Cisco and Juniper firewalls.
- Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, vLCM).
- Strong hands-on experience with HPE & Dell server firmware.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with backup solutions.
- Exposure to automation, such as PowerShell scripting.
- ITIL Foundation certification.
- Vendor certifications from Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, or Juniper.
- Experience working within the Network Rail or Transport for London industry sectors.
