Wärtsilä is hiring a Supplier Development Engineer

The Supplier Development Engineer will support the Energy Storage team in Suzhou, focusing on ensuring product quality, supplier compliance, and ongoing improvements for battery-related components including cells, modules, PDU, and BMS. This role involves close collaboration with suppliers and internal teams to enhance performance, reliability, and sustainable practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the qualification process for new and existing suppliers and contractors.
  • Carry out supplier evaluations, including compliance checks, audits, and follow-up actions according to established audit plans.
  • Collaborate with suppliers during the implementation of new manufacturing processes, supporting transition through start-up, qualification, and ramp-up phases.
  • Work with suppliers to execute process validation and test method validation, helping define production processes, tools, equipment, and control systems.
  • Ensure supplier quality inspections and audits are scheduled and conducted to meet quality standards, maintaining transparency of results.
  • Analyze reported quality issues and audit findings, identify root causes, agree on corrective actions, and ensure implementation to prevent recurrence.
  • Drive continuous supplier improvement and risk mitigation through development programs and effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Participate in cross-functional product teams to enhance supplier manufacturing and inspection processes.
  • Take responsibility for quality, delivery, and cost initiatives using established Supplier Development tools.
  • Assess, select, and apply standard engineering methods to evaluate supplied components and supplier production processes.
  • Lead operational excellence projects at supplier sites to improve performance and reduce costs.
  • Perform inspections and testing to verify product quality and compliance.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in battery cells, modules, PDU, BMS, electrical engineering, supplier development, or quality assurance within power systems, renewable energy, or energy storage sectors.
  • Experience with product validation and approval processes such as Product Part Approval Process or equivalent, including internal procedures like Supplier and Part Approval Process.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, with experience interacting across levels and cultures as part of a global supplier development and quality team.
  • Familiarity with analytical methods for investigating component failures and capable of managing both technical and administrative tasks.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities.
  • Results-driven with a strong focus on action and achieving outcomes.
  • Self-motivated individual who actively learns and applies knowledge to deliver results.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve production line issues.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with persistence in implementing and tracking follow-up actions to ensure quality and sustainability.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% of the time.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in product and process auditing, as well as management system audits related to ESG, SA8000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or ISO 45001 is preferred. Certification in Lean or Six Sigma is considered a plus.
