About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Event Bus, Experimentation, and gRPC team, you will design and implement high-impact, cross-cutting solutions that support event-driven architecture, safe feature rollouts, and efficient service-to-service communication across nearly all services in the company.
Responsibilities
- Lead the creation and enhancement of platform-level features with a focus on scalability and reliability.
- Work closely with teams across the organization to gather requirements and help shape a strategic technical roadmap.
- Define and promote engineering standards for event-driven design, API contracts, and incremental feature deployment.
- Guide junior engineers through mentorship and foster a culture of technical rigor and continuous improvement.
- Drive initiatives that enhance software quality and engineering practices across the broader organization.

It maintains core libraries for Ruby, Kotlin, Python, and TypeScript, ensuring secure, observable, and high-performing platforms. The team prioritizes ease of use, data integrity, performance, and security, empowering engineers across the organization to adopt best practices efficiently.
The Team
The Event Bus, Experimentation, and gRPC team develops frameworks and tooling that enable event-driven architectures, measurable feature rollouts, and efficient service-to-service communication. It owns the build systems and shared libraries for Ruby, Kotlin, Python, and TypeScript. The team emphasizes usability, performance, data quality, observability, and security. Engineers on this team build cross-cutting solutions used by nearly every service in the organization and contribute directly to the company’s long-term architectural vision. The team seeks a product-minded engineer passionate about platform tooling across event streaming, experimentation, and gRPC.

- This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.
- Regular onsite collaboration sessions occur roughly once per quarter (~3 days at a time) in one of our main offices (Columbus, OH, Austin, TX or San Mateo, CA).
- Upstart will cover all travel related expenses for onsite meetups.
- Most employees live and work anywhere in the United States.
- Offices are located in San Mateo, California; Columbus, Ohio; Austin, Texas; and New York City, NY (opening Summer 2026).
