We are looking for two Senior On-Board Computer and Data Handling Engineers to deliver expert technical support to the European Space Agency at ESTEC in the Netherlands. The selected candidates will play a central role in shaping data handling systems for space platforms and payloads, covering all phases from concept to in-orbit operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and consultancy across ESA projects, programmes, and feasibility studies related to data handling architecture and implementation
- Lead technical evaluations of procurement proposals and contribute to project reviews and system validation
- Identify critical technical challenges in hardware development and support resolution strategies
- Define and manage research and development initiatives addressing both immediate and long-term mission needs
- Shape technology roadmaps and contribute to the planning of future innovation activities
- Support laboratory testing and verification of electronic systems designed for space environments
- Monitor advancements in electronics, radiation-hardened design, and digital processing to maintain cutting-edge expertise
- Share knowledge and promote best practices across technical teams and disciplines
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in computer science, electronics, telecommunications, or a related field, and bring at least five years of hands-on experience in space-qualified hardware development. Proven expertise in the design, simulation, and testing of data handling units is essential.
Required technical knowledge includes digital and analogue circuit design, FPGA and microcontroller integration, and the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components with radiation mitigation strategies. Experience with single-point-failure-free architectures and fault containment methods is critical.
Applicants should have direct experience in space hardware verification, spacecraft system integration, and supporting procurement activities such as statement of work definition and proposal assessment.
Preferred Expertise
- Design of electrical ground support equipment for data handling systems
- Development of electronic boards used in radiation testing environments
