About the Role

As a Senior Database Engineer, you will ensure the stability, efficiency, and growth of database platforms that power essential educational services. You'll balance proactive development with responsive operations, maintaining high availability and performance across distributed systems.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the ongoing health and performance of production databases, aligning operational needs with long-term engineering goals.
  • Architect resilient database solutions in AWS, optimizing for uptime, low latency, and disaster resilience.
  • Lead critical database operations such as migrations, upgrades, backups, and recovery planning.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex performance issues in coordination with infrastructure and application teams.
  • Implement robust monitoring, alerting, and incident response protocols to maintain system reliability.
  • Enforce security policies, access controls, and audit compliance across database environments.
  • Automate routine tasks and infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure as Code and custom scripting.
  • Forecast capacity needs and recommend cost-effective scaling strategies based on usage patterns.
  • Take part in an on-call schedule and contribute to post-mortem analyses to strengthen system resilience.
  • Work collaboratively with global teams, attending regular meetings between 16:00 and 19:00 GMT.

Requirements

  • Proven experience with PostgreSQL and AWS Aurora at scale.
  • Strong background in database reliability, performance tuning, and architectural design in AWS.
  • Hands-on expertise in lifecycle management: provisioning, patching, migration, backup, and recovery.
  • Track record of resolving production database incidents and improving system durability.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools to streamline operations.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code practices for consistent deployment.
  • Familiarity with monitoring frameworks and operational runbook development.
  • Capacity planning and cost optimization skills in cloud environments.
  • Ability to support on-call responsibilities and collaborate across time zones.

Work Mode
