University of Auckland is hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow - Te Kura Mātai Taiao|School of Environment- 24-month fixed-term

About the Role

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow is sought to join the School of Environment at the University of Auckland for a 24-month fixed-term role. The successful candidate will investigate shoreline change and vegetation dynamics on tropical atoll islands using Earth Observation and remote sensing technologies, contributing to critical research for Pacific communities and global coastal resilience planning.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse satellite and remote sensing datasets to understand coastal change in atoll environments.
  • Use Earth Observation platforms to quantify shoreline and vegetation dynamics across tropical islands.
  • Contribute to an active research programme focused on the future of tropical coastal regions.
  • Assist in delivering an introductory remote sensing course within the School of Environment.
  • Contribute to the supervision and mentoring of postgraduate or Honours students.

Requirements

  • PhD in remote sensing, earth sciences, GIS, coastal science or a related discipline
  • Experience working with remote sensing datasets and geospatial analysis
  • Knowledge of coastal change, atoll island geomorphology, or tropical vegetation dynamics
  • Experience using geospatial tools such as Google Earth Engine
  • Experience using geospatial tools such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting or delivering practical teaching in remote sensing
  • Experience working with coastal or island environments

Job Description: Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity Vine – Violence Information Aotearoa – is the national centre for family and sexual violence research and information, based within the Public Policy Institute in the Faculty of Arts and Education. We are looking for a Māori Research Lead to drive te ao Māori knowledge translation and mobilisation across Vine’s programme of work. In this role you will help ensure mātauranga Māori and kaupapa Māori research is visible, accessible and influential – supporting better responses to violence and improved outcomes for whānau Māori. Working at the interface of research, policy and practice, you will build strong relationships with Māori researchers, practitioners, communities, hapori and other sector partners, while contributing to evidence briefs, reports, webinars and other resources. This is a part-time (0.6 FTE / 22.5 hours per week), fixed-term role for 12 months. The salary range is $87,000 – $107,500 (pro rata for part time hours). While the team is primarily based in Auckland, we welcome applications from elsewhere in Aotearoa. Flexible and remote working can be supported, with some travel to Auckland and Wellington required. This position may be well suited to an early career researcher wanting to grow their impact. The part-time arrangement makes it ideal for someone maintaining other research or sector commitments.
