The Pool Lifeguard at Camp Mather, operated by the City and County of San Francisco, plays a vital role in maintaining safety across aquatic facilities including the swimming pool, Birch Lake waterfront, and Lake Lawn. This seasonal position involves active supervision, emergency response, and contributing to the broader camp community through shared responsibilities and recreational engagement.
What You'll Do
- Patrol and monitor pool, lake & waterfront activities, facility patrons and swimmers to prevent accidents
- Identify people in distress or those in danger
- Conduct rescue operations
- Perform lifesaving techniques
- Assist swimmers in distress and rescue swimmers in danger
- Pull drowning victims out of the water
- Call for emergency assistance
- Perform first aid resuscitation measures when necessary
- Communicate with facility patrons
- Caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards
- Enforce pool, lake & waterfront rules and regulations
- Maintain order in and around the pool, lake & waterfront
- Inspect and observe the pool, lake & waterfront area, change rooms and deck for safety and cleanliness
- Perform general pool, lake & waterfront facility maintenance duties including cleaning and disinfecting pool, lake & waterfront change rooms and deck
- Take and record water quality samples in the absence of a supervisor
- Prepare the facility for various aquatic events
- Handle and store equipment and materials when not in use
- Collect revenue and fees for facility use and participation in facility activities and events
- Greet and check in facility guests
- Provide customer service
- Share general information regarding facility operations, programs and schedules
- Prepare incident and accident reports as necessary
- Perform kitchen duties (serving meals, cleaning after dinners, stocking and performing industrial style kitchen cleanup) at least two to three times a week
- Perform light janitorial cleanup at least two to three times a week
- Participate in recreational activities including the weekly Staff Talent Show
- Participate in camp orientation campfire
- Perform other related duties as assigned
What We're Looking For

- Inspect and maintain safety and cleanliness of aquatic areas and facilities
- Perform general cleaning and disinfecting of change rooms and decks
- Take and record water quality samples when supervisor is absent
- Prepare aquatic facilities for events
- Handle and store equipment properly
- Collect fees and check in guests
- Provide customer service and facility information
- Prepare incident and accident reports
- Perform kitchen duties including serving and industrial cleanup
- Perform light janitorial work
- Participate in weekly Staff Talent Show
- Participate in camp orientation campfire
- Work six days a week, 6.5 hours per day, with shifts possibly broken up
- Work weekends and evenings
- Work in shared housing with other staff
- Arrive at camp by May 17, 2026
- Attend Waterfront Training from May 25 to May 31, 2026
- Complete camp assignment by August 31, 2026
- Depart by September 5, 2026 at the latest

Work Mode
Onsite at Camp Mather, High Sierra near Yosemite National Park, about 3 hours east of San Francisco. Work schedule to be determined; shifts include weekends and evenings; overtime may be required.
