Role Overview
This position provides essential technical support for computer systems operating in some of the most demanding environments on Earth, including Antarctica. As part of the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP), the technician maintains and troubleshoots IT infrastructure across multiple international locations, ensuring continuous functionality and compliance with federal security policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and support specialized computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment for program-specific operations.
- Conduct system updates and infrastructure improvements for critical meteorology and aviation support systems.
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues, including fault isolation, repair, and replacement of IT equipment.
- Perform operational testing before and after system installations to verify performance and reliability.
- Support lifecycle management of IT systems, from initial design to decommissioning, including configuration tracking and upgrades.
- Assist in procurement, training, and disposal of computer systems and equipment.
- Ensure all systems meet federal compliance standards and support remediation of security vulnerabilities.
- Provide after-hours support for remote operations, particularly for weather data systems based in Charleston.
- Research emerging technologies related to data processing, storage, communications, and network architecture.
- Develop technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and training materials for software and systems.
- Support web-based projects and integrate new technologies into existing platforms.
- Travel to Antarctica for six months per year or on a rotational basis as part of the IT support team.
Qualifications
Applicants must be able to meet the physical and medical requirements for deployment to Antarctica under USAP guidelines. A CompTIA Security+ certification is required. Candidates should have at least one year of hands-on experience with UNIX and Windows operating systems, virtual environments, and standard Microsoft applications.
Essential skills include strong problem-solving abilities, technical proficiency with computer systems, and effective communication. The ideal candidate works well independently and in team settings, manages multiple priorities, and adapts to isolated, extreme environments.
A High School diploma or GED is required. Experience in analyzing system design, configuring servers, and supporting data integration is highly valued.
Work Environment
This is an onsite role with assignments in Charleston, South Carolina; Christchurch, New Zealand; and McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Technicians must be prepared for extended deployments in cold, remote conditions and must pass required medical and physical qualification exams. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
