About the Role

Conservation Legacy is looking for a Natural Resource Management Assistant - AmeriCorps member to contribute to fire management and planning efforts in Alaska's National Parks. In this 12-week role, you will increase efficacy in understanding fuels treatments and inform park management planning by streamlining and organizing data collection, processing, and analyses.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute to fire management and planning efforts by streamlining and organizing data collection, processing, and analyses routines related to fuels treatment monitoring.
  • Develop, test, and apply methodologies to streamline analysis of datasets for quick application to management actions.
  • Produce standardized data summaries and graphs for use in annual reporting.
  • Investigate the accuracy of high-resolution imagery analyses (i.e., Lidar, Structure from Motion) to identify canopy metrics.
  • Explore the use of ArcGIS online, Survey123, and FieldMaps to collect and/or share field data.
  • Co-develop an independent project based on candidate abilities, interests, and emergent Fire Ecology program needs.
  • Analyze existing datasets to answer questions of interest using specified techniques.
  • Create engaging interpretive materials to communicate recent research results.

What We're Looking For

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for Conservation Legacy and a separate government security background check for the NPS site location prior to starting.
  • Available to participate for 12 weeks.
  • Knowledge of R.
  • Experience planning and managing data projects.
  • Strong organizational and computational skills.
  • Ability to serve well independently, troubleshoot technological challenges, and effectively develop, document, and communicate results.
  • Valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle.

Nice to Have

  • Completed at least three years toward a degree in the biological, ecological, data, or natural resource management sciences.
  • Completed coursework in computer programming, statistics, data visualization, or geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Additional coursework in fire ecology, forestry, plant physiology, science communication, and/or technical writing.

Team & Environment

Direct supervision and support provided by the Park’s Fire Ecologists. Office shared with fire management and resource protection staff.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,956.35 upon successful completion.

Work Mode

This is an onsite position located at Denali National Park and Preserve in Denali Park, Alaska.
