The Canadian Press seeks a Manager, Editorial Visuals to lead our award-winning visuals team and drive innovation in visual content. You will oversee all aspects of our photo product, manage staff and freelance photographers, and evolve our visual offering to include new formats.
What You'll Do
- Manage eight staff photographers and a team of visuals deskers with support from an assistant supervisor.
- Maintain an up-to-date roster of freelancers for rapid deployment to ensure we are first on the scene for breaking news.
- Manage the freelance budget, making strategic decisions to maximize value.
- Examine workflows and systems to increase speed and improve efficiency.
- Work to evolve and reimagine the visual product, pushing forward with video and user-generated content.
- Use analytics and client needs to allocate resources effectively.
- Champion the visuals team while staying open to future trends in visual content.
What We're Looking For
- A proven leader with the enthusiasm and ability to motivate staff.
- Proven experience in photojournalism.
- Knowledge of photo editing programs including Photoshop and Photo Mechanic.
- Experience managing a budget.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently under pressure.
- Experience innovating and knowledge of media industry trends in visual storytelling.
- Willingness to occasionally jump in when news breaks off hours.
Nice to Have
- Management experience.
- Understanding of photo editing and photo tools copyright, intellectual property, and licensing concepts.
