About the Role

Inalab is hiring a Geomagnetism – Edge Software Developer - Intermediate to support the USGS Geological Hazards Science Center (GHSC). You will plan, configure, and implement complex data acquisition systems for the Geomagnetism Program, ensuring reliable data delivery and observatory operations.

What You'll Do

  • Build and modify software to automate real-time data processing, submittal, and archival of Geomagnetism Program data.
  • Assist in creating and implementing a new web service for automated real-time data processing.
  • Develop applications to automate program operations like data monitoring, system monitoring, and report generation.
  • Maintain thorough documentation for all scripts, code, and configurations you create or modify.
  • Submit code for review to Geomagnetism Program and HazDev staff throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Design test plans to evaluate the performance and stability of new or modified software.
  • Document test results, clearly identifying shortcomings and potential improvements.
  • Create guides documenting the process for creating or modifying software and applications.
  • Provide support through oral and written presentations and documentation.
  • Develop general data management, scientific analysis, and real-time data acquisition applications.
  • Develop, support, and interface with specialized real-time field data acquisition software.
  • Participate in monitoring and maintaining applications to ensure maximum uptime in an operational environment.

What We're Looking For

  • Proficiency with the Java programming language (not JavaScript).
  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems and shell scripting.
  • Experience with Git and GitLab or similar collaborative software revision control systems (Crucial).
  • US citizenship or Green Card / Permanent Resident status, with the ability to pass a Background Investigation.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Linux system administration basics.
  • Familiarity with container and cloud programming.
