The University Writing Center is hiring a GEAR UP Math Tutor to join our team supporting the GEAR UP Staunton program. In this role, you will provide direct academic tutoring and mentorship to middle and high school students, helping them build foundational skills for college and career success.
What You'll Do
- Provide tutoring and targeted academic support to students primarily in math and occasionally other subjects.
- Support middle school and high school students in completing homework, finishing missing assignments, reviewing for tests, and taking standardized assessments.
- Work with GEAR UP staff, teachers, and school administration to develop and deliver workshop content on study skills and test preparation.
- Mentor high school students on succeeding in secondary school and preparing for post-secondary education and career options, including college applications.
- Maintain accurate records of student participation in the student database system.
- Collaborate with GEAR UP staff and school personnel to foster effective team building and cooperatively fulfill shared duties.
What We're Looking For
- JMU Institutional Employment eligibility.
- Must be a degree-seeking student enrolled at least half-time (6 credits undergraduate or 5 credits graduate).
- Must pass a background check through the school system.
- Must be willing to travel to Staunton two or three days per week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday, between 3-6 PM during the school year (August to May).
Nice to Have
- Availability to start Spring 2026 and continue in the position Fall 2026.
- Availability for summer hours during the month of June.
Team & Environment
Works closely with the GEAR UP Project Director, Program Advisors, Parent Liaison, and a team of other student workers.
Work Mode
This is an onsite position located in Staunton, VA.
