Checkr is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for our driver record check (MVR) system, one of our highest-volume screening products. In this role, you will own the reliability and accuracy of MVR's complex supply chain across 51+ DMV jurisdictions, drive technical strategy, and partner closely with Product, Legal, and Compliance to expand capabilities and ensure regulatory compliance.
What You'll Do
- Lead and develop the MVR engineering team — setting technical direction, driving performance conversations, and building the hiring pipeline.
- Own the reliability and accuracy of MVR’s supply chain across 51+ jurisdictions — a complex integration environment with unique failure modes per DMV.
- Drive improvements in observability, reliability, and system resiliency to minimize customer impact.
- Partner with Product to define and execute the MVR roadmap, including Continuous MVR and Commercial MVR capabilities.
- Drive technical strategy for a complex third-party integration landscape — balancing near-term reliability with long-term architecture investments.
- Lead the team’s adoption of AI-assisted development practices while maintaining quality guardrails.
- Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Operations to navigate DOT regulatory requirements and ensure data accuracy.
- Represent MVR in cross-functional planning — acting as the engineering voice on team capabilities and constraints.
What We're Looking For
- 4+ years as an engineering manager, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
- 8+ years as a software engineer, with strong command of service architecture, distributed systems, and system design.
- Experience managing complex third-party integration environments.
- A track record of improving operational metrics in high-stakes production environments.
- Experience working on regulated products where data accuracy and legal compliance are non-negotiable.
- Strong incident management skills — can lead both technical response and stakeholder communication.
- Ability to make prioritization decisions quickly with a clear framework.
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A genuine investment in developing people through career conversations and stretch assignments.
- Humility, openness to feedback, and eagerness to learn.
- An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: raises the bar, moves with urgency, stays resilient, and takes ownership.
