Gusto is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead HR Labs, a new team using AI to change how HR expertise is delivered to small businesses. You will be responsible for leading a small team building novel AI-powered tools and experiences, requiring close engagement with both technical and product work.
What You'll Do
- Set technical direction for a team building novel AI-powered tools and experiences.
- Work closely with product and design to shape what the team builds.
- Help engineers navigate a fast-moving, ambiguous problem space.
- Coach, mentor, and grow a small team of engineers with diverse skill sets.
- Build a team culture that values craft, speed, and intellectual honesty.
- Identify where the bottleneck is and shift your own focus accordingly.

- Experience in a high-growth or early-stage environment where you wore multiple hats.
- Background as a generalist comfortable context-switching across frontend, backend, or multiple domains.
- Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails.
- You've founded a company — or it's something you see yourself doing someday.

You will lead a small team within HR Labs, a new team inside Gusto.
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary: $200,000/yr to $247,000/yr for New York City
- Equity: Stock equity is additional

This is a hybrid position open to candidates in Denver, San Francisco, or New York City.
