OpenAI is looking for a Backend Software Engineer to build and operate the systems that make Connectors dependable at global scale. In this infrastructure-focused role, you’ll design the control plane, reliability foundations, and operational tooling that power connector execution.
What You'll Do
- Design and operate the infrastructure that powers connector sync, indexing, and retrieval at scale.
- Build the control plane primitives for connectors, including rollout controls, configuration management, and kill switches.
- Own reliability and operational excellence through SLOs, monitoring, incident response, and capacity planning.
- Create guardrails for safe multi-tenant execution, including isolation boundaries, secrets handling, and rate limits.
- Partner with security and compliance teams to ensure enterprise requirements are met.
- Improve developer velocity via internal tooling for local dev workflows, canary environments, and observability.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of professional engineering experience in infra, SRE, or platform roles.
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals and production instincts for availability, latency, and resilience.
- Experience building and operating services with meaningful uptime and scale requirements.
- Proficiency in one or more backend languages and comfort working close to systems concerns.
- Deep familiarity with observability, incident management, and reliability engineering practices.
- Ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces and push pragmatic solutions into production.
Nice to Have
- Interest in AI/ML.
