UFG Insurance is hiring an AVP of Construction Underwriting to drive the underwriting strategy for our Construction Business Unit. Reporting to the Construction Business Unit Leader, you will provide referral support, consultation, and training while collaborating with Line of Business Leaders and regional teams to execute strategic goals.
What You'll Do
- Review referrals based on technical complexity, market segmentation strategy, and appetite, collaborating with analytics, product development, risk management, claims, and region leadership.
- Adhere to and support the overall Business Unit strategic direction.
- Provide guidance on acceptability for the most complex underwriting risks.
- Serve as a technical expert and resource to Regional Vice Presidents, Branch AVPs, Underwriting Managers, and Underwriters.
- Conduct research for underwriters on specific classes of business, operations, or other technical subjects.
- Maintain current knowledge of the regulatory environment and emerging issues.
- Collaborate with internal partners to develop guidelines and deliver training to build construction expertise across Underwriting and Risk Control.
- Lead and analyze problems for assigned teams, executing team strategy effectively.
- Develop key analytic insights, leading indicators, and profitability drivers through internal and external research.
- Monitor the portfolio to identify shifts in mix, evaluate performance, and uncover growth opportunities through expanded appetite and profitability improvement.
- Contribute to evaluating the competitive landscape to ensure business sustainability and recommend improvements.
- Act as a subject matter expert on company product features, benefits, and industry trends.
- Develop and maintain strong agency relationships with key customers to ensure positive and profitable outcomes on complex accounts.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years total experience in property/casualty insurance with a solid background in construction.
- Exceptional technical skills and above-average interpersonal and training abilities.
- Experience with large, complex, and middle market-sized accounts.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong influencing and decision-making skills.
- Ability to think strategically with supporting analytical and problem-solving skills, including dealing with ambiguity.
- Solid knowledge of construction, including associated underwriting technical processes and concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work to meet timely deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively build relationships across all organizational levels.
- Experience influencing and collaborating at the executive level.
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to participate in continuing education, including obtaining the Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) certification within the first 90 days if not already held.

Team & Environment
This role may direct a team of technical experts in support of Construction strategy execution and reports to the Construction Business Unit Leader.

- Compensation: $155,000 - $200,000 annually.
