Role Overview
As a 5G/6G Network Engineer, you will play a key technical role in advancing satellite-based telecommunications through ESA's IRIS2 program, based at ESTEC in the Netherlands. Your work will focus on the development and verification of Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technologies, bridging space and terrestrial communication systems for next-generation connectivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver system engineering expertise for ESA-led activities within the IRIS2 framework, with a focus on 5G/6G NTN integration
- Design and implement software protocol stacks for both satellite and ground segments, evaluating architectural trade-offs such as Split 2 and full gNB deployment on-board
- Lead end-to-end validation of 5G gNB systems, conducting lab and in-orbit testing to ensure performance and compliance
- Monitor and manage interfaces between spacecraft, ground infrastructure, and the 5G Core network
- Develop and operate representative test beds incorporating user terminals and space-based gNBs
- Plan and execute test campaigns using live satellite experiments to reduce technical risks
- Track and influence 3GPP standardization to maintain alignment with program objectives
- Contribute technical documentation and proposals to support global standards development
- Perform requirements analysis and consolidation for both system and testbed environments
- Define functional and physical architectures, including interface specifications and design trade-offs
- Carry out technical risk assessments and non-conformance analysis
- Participate in and support reviews of industrial deliverables, including PDR, CDR, QR, IOVR, and SD milestones
- Evaluate contractor submissions and prepare technical feedback for ESA
Qualifications
Applicants must be eligible to obtain a personal security clearance issued by a national security authority within an EU Member State.
Technical Environment
Your work will center on 5G and 6G NTN technologies, with hands-on engagement in 3GPP standards, gNB implementations, 5G Core integration, protocol stack development, system validation, and in-orbit testing. Experience with spacecraft-to-ground interfaces and end-to-end test bed design is essential.
