Outdoor Afro celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. Our national not-for-profit organization reconnects Black people to our lands, water, and wildlife through outdoor education, recreation, and conservation.
Some examples of Outdoor Afro’s year-round activities range from fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, gardening, skiing, and more. The organization is led by a team based in Oakland, California, and supported by over 100 volunteer leaders across more than 32 states.
Founded in 2009 by Rue Mapp in Oakland, California, Outdoor Afro has grown into the nation’s leading organization where Black people and nature meet. The organization impacts communities in over 60 cities nationwide and has built a network of more than 60,000 participants.
