Responsibilities
- Serve as the night shift operations watch officer within a federal coordination center.
- Maintain and relay real-time situational awareness for all types of incidents, including natural disasters, security events, and technological emergencies.
- Communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing to support timely emergency management and incident response.
- Prepare, research, analyze, draft, edit, and distribute operational reports, alerts, and situational updates in accordance with established procedures.
- Issue emergency notifications through the Commerce Emergency Notification System (Everbridge) following standard operating protocols.
- Monitor and respond to emails on classified networks and answer incoming calls on official watch officer phone lines.
- Gather, process, and evaluate classified message traffic from SIPRNet and JWICS to identify incidents affecting mission-critical functions.
- Conduct routine and on-demand testing of communication systems to verify functionality of voice, audio, and data networks.
- Develop or update templates and specialized reports to support incident management and operational continuity as needed.
- Support the creation, review, and implementation of updated policies and standard operating procedures for the coordination center.
- Be prepared to deploy to a continuity facility within two hours of headquarters to perform watch duties when required.

- Work takes place in an office setting ranging from unclassified areas to a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) at the Commerce Headquarters in Washington, DC.
- This role requires physical presence on-site; telework is not permitted.
- The watch officer may be required to travel via personal vehicle to a continuity facility within a two-hour drive of headquarters when necessary.
- Work schedule begins with approximately 3 weeks of day shift orientation and training, followed by 1–2 months of night shift shadowing before transitioning to independent 12-hour night shifts.
- Night shift starts at 5:45 PM with a 15-minute handover, followed by a 12-hour shift concluding at 6:00 AM after turnover to the incoming federal team.
- The position follows a biweekly schedule totaling 85.75 hours across seven 12.25-hour shifts, typically structured as Week 1: WWOOWWW (61.25 hours), Week 2: OOWWOOO (24.5 hours), then repeated.
- Candidates may be subject to a government security clearance process and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
- U.S. citizenship may be required for certain assignments.
- Ability to navigate large federal buildings is necessary, including walking moderate to long distances as needed.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 10 pounds is required.
- Work may include periods of standing, walking, or moving between multiple floors or operational zones.
