About the Role
The technician will conduct field investigations to identify and map underground utilities, applying SUE methodologies to support design and construction planning.
Responsibilities
- Perform field work to locate subsurface utilities using electromagnetic and ground-penetrating radar equipment
- Mark utility lines on the surface according to standard color codes
- Collect field data using digital tools and field notebooks
- Document utility information in compliance with SUE quality levels
- Assist in preparing reports and as-built drawings
- Communicate findings to project managers and engineers
- Follow safety protocols during field operations
- Work in various outdoor environments and weather conditions
- Coordinate with utility owners and one-call centers
- Verify accuracy of utility records and maps
- Support project teams with real-time field updates
- Maintain and calibrate field equipment
- Adhere to project schedules and deadlines
- Participate in pre-construction utility clearance efforts
- Ensure compliance with ASCE Standard 38-02 guidelines
- Assist in quality control checks for SUE data
- Transport to project sites using company vehicles
- Operate in urban and rural settings
- Respond to changing project demands and priorities
- Attend project meetings when required
Nice to Have
- Previous experience as a SUE technician
- Training in utility detection methods
- Certification from a recognized SUE or locating program
- Experience with GIS data collection
- Familiarity with construction surveying practices
- Knowledge of local utility providers in Virginia
- Experience using field software for data logging
