As a Staff Frontend Engineer (above Expert level in our engineering career framework), you are a hands-on technical leader with company-level impact across our Real Estate vertical. You’ll shape and evolve the frontend architecture powering our portals, create shared frontend solutions adopted by multiple teams, and orchestrate complex cross-team initiatives. At a high level, you will: - Set technical direction for frontend across multiple teams, building alignment among engineers, product managers, designers, and senior stakeholders. - Influence roadmaps, investment decisions, and engineering priorities by connecting frontend strategy to business outcomes, delivery risk and customer impact. - Defining and driving the culture of engineering excellence, while leading the evolution of our Real Estate frontend architecture to support future requirements, setting and improving SLAs/SLOs and anticipating ripple effects across systems together with other engineers and principals. - Act as a trusted technical leader across teams and locations for frontend topics, shaping how web experiences are built across our organisation and influencing decisions at both team and leadership level. - Represent frontend engineering in cross-functional and leadership discussions, helping the organisation make better long-term technical trade-offs. - Design and create shared frontend libraries, components and tooling (e.g. design system, performance monitoring) that are widely used by internal teams, focusing on pragmatic, reusable solutions and driving their adoption. - Orchestrate multi-system refactors and migrations like framework upgrades and cross-product harmonisation. - Mentor and coach other engineers through structured mentorship, pairing, and feedback, helping them grow their skills and closing skill gaps you observe in the organisation by organising structured training for our people. - Model a healthy feedback culture, helping people navigate tough conversations and conflicts in a constructive, blameless way. - Challenge and improve team and cross-team processes, suggesting changes that improve focus, quality, and speed when needed. - You’ll still write plenty of code, but your impact will be measured just as much by how you multiply the effectiveness of others as by your individual output. Your day-to-day - You'll be part of a product team, splitting time about half and half between product delivery and staff responsibilities depending on the current needs and priorities - Innovate, design, implement, and deploy frontend-focused engineering solutions for our products, from discovery to production. - Build alignment across teams with different goals and constraints, and unblock progress on ambiguous, cross-cutting initiatives. Step in to create clarity, momentum, and shared ownership when needed. - Own the end-to-end technical vision for key user journeys like Homegate and Immoscout24 and more, with a strong focus on performance, accessibility, UX quality, and reliability - Lead cross-team frontend initiatives (for example: shared design system improvements, cross-brand UI harmonisation, performance budgets, or observability patterns). - Identify and surface cross-cutting technical bottlenecks, such as performance drags in the core user journey or build-time inefficiencies, and advocate for their resolution at the leadership level. - Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to shape technical strategy and trade-offs for new features and platform work - Partner with DevX to co-develop engineering 'blueprints' and health scorecards, setting the gold standard for what 'good' looks like in our frontend repositories - Evaluate, prototype, and introduce new frontend technologies and approaches (frameworks, tooling, patterns), document your findings, and drive adoption where they make sense - Own and evolve the Frontend ADR process, ensuring technical decisions are documented, socialized, and consistently implemented across our organization - Guide and review the work of other engineers through design reviews, code reviews, guild, and informal coaching. - Help the team embrace and leverage AI & large language models in our engineering workflows and products - Contribute to and facilitate the frontend guild, tech chats, and other cross-team knowledge-sharing formats - Promote a culture of high-quality engineering: testing, monitoring with Datadog, observability, security, and operational excellence Our tech stack You’ll work primarily on the frontend, while collaborating with fullstack engineers: - Frontend: mainly Vue.js and some React both with TypeScript as the language of choice. We run a mix of client-side, server-side, pre-rendered, and hybrid web apps - Backend: Node.js and TypeScript, serverless and microservices architecture in a cloud-based environment using AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, S3, and more) - Monitoring & Observability: Mainly Datadog plus logging/alerting best practices - AI & Tooling: We actively adopt the latest developments in AI technology and expect you to embrace innovation offered by large language models in your daily work Learn more about us and our engineering practices in our blog at https://medium.com/smg-real-estate
