Gusto is hiring a Staff Engineer

At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We're looking for a Staff Engineer to build and maintain the data infrastructure powering Gusto Retirement. You'll join the cross-functional Retirement Data Platform team, partnering with Engineering, Product, Data Science, Analysts, Compliance, and Operations to translate stakeholder problems into practical data solutions.

What You'll Do

• Build and refine infrastructure and tools that enable other teams to work with data.
• Take full ownership of solutions, partner with other teams, work with stakeholders to refine ideas, shape scope, implement solutions, monitor production, and troubleshoot problems.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate with existing systems and unblock dependencies.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to support the deployment of supported platform services and the management of the underlying infrastructure.
• Identify, adopt and improve frameworks, policies and tools to streamline the development process.

What We're Looking For

• At least 7 years of experience in a similar role.
• Hands-on experience building data infrastructure at scale.
• Strong programming skills in Python and proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation.
• Experience building solutions in the cloud (GCP/AWS/Snowflake).
• Experience with streaming systems (Kafka or similar).
• Ability to turn vague requirements into clear deliverables with minimal guidance.
• Curiosity and ability to operate in an AI-native environment, leveraging AI tooling to enhance infrastructure operations.

Benefits & Compensation

• Compensation: $163,000-$204,000/year in Denver, $178,000-$223,000/year in Los Angeles, and $197,000-$247,000/year for San Francisco, New York, and Seattle.

Work Mode

This is a hybrid role, open to candidates in Denver, San Francisco, New York City, and Scottsdale.
