Responsibilities
- Design end-to-end control architectures for systems scaling from pilot to commercial operations, covering PLCs, safety systems, SCADA/HMI, data historians, network infrastructure, alarm management, and operational mode logic
- Establish a layered control framework connecting basic regulatory control with supervisory and advanced control layers such as model predictive control and state estimation
- Create modular, reusable control code in PLCs and safety-rated PLCs using standardized function blocks for common equipment like valves, heaters, compressors, and reactors
- Lead the design and implementation of safety interlocks, permissives, fail-safe responses, alarm systems, and safety instrumented functions
- Develop state-driven control systems with embedded state estimators to infer unmeasured process variables and filter noisy sensor data
- Construct inferential models ('soft sensors') to estimate reactor conditions, product quality, and equipment health, along with fault detection and diagnostic capabilities
- Test and optimize advanced control algorithms using simulation, phased rollouts, and coordinated field commissioning
- Evaluate complex, multivariable control loops constrained by operational limits and deploy model predictive control solutions in appropriate platforms
- Partner with software vendors and internal teams to develop tools for control analysis, tuning, and performance monitoring to support R&D and long-term operations
- Develop dynamic simulation or digital twin environments to test and validate new control strategies in a safe, virtual setting
- Work cross-functionally with process, mechanical, electrical, and operations engineers to convert process requirements into reliable and maintainable control logic
- Support system startup, commissioning, issue resolution, and ongoing performance improvements
- Enforce strict version control, comprehensive documentation, and formal change management procedures
