Lydian is hiring a Staff Controls & Automation Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Design end-to-end control architectures for systems scaling from pilot to commercial operations, covering PLCs, safety systems, SCADA/HMI, data historians, network infrastructure, alarm management, and operational mode logic
  • Establish a layered control framework connecting basic regulatory control with supervisory and advanced control layers such as model predictive control and state estimation
  • Create modular, reusable control code in PLCs and safety-rated PLCs using standardized function blocks for common equipment like valves, heaters, compressors, and reactors
  • Lead the design and implementation of safety interlocks, permissives, fail-safe responses, alarm systems, and safety instrumented functions
  • Develop state-driven control systems with embedded state estimators to infer unmeasured process variables and filter noisy sensor data
  • Construct inferential models ('soft sensors') to estimate reactor conditions, product quality, and equipment health, along with fault detection and diagnostic capabilities
  • Test and optimize advanced control algorithms using simulation, phased rollouts, and coordinated field commissioning
  • Evaluate complex, multivariable control loops constrained by operational limits and deploy model predictive control solutions in appropriate platforms
  • Partner with software vendors and internal teams to develop tools for control analysis, tuning, and performance monitoring to support R&D and long-term operations
  • Develop dynamic simulation or digital twin environments to test and validate new control strategies in a safe, virtual setting
  • Work cross-functionally with process, mechanical, electrical, and operations engineers to convert process requirements into reliable and maintainable control logic
  • Support system startup, commissioning, issue resolution, and ongoing performance improvements
  • Enforce strict version control, comprehensive documentation, and formal change management procedures

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience level
  • Significant equity compensation package
  • Generous paid time off policy to support work-life balance
  • Comprehensive health benefits with full coverage of employee medical, vision, and dental premiums and substantial support for dependents
  • 401(k) plan with employer matching contributions

About company
Lydian logo

Lydian builds turnkey CO₂-to-fuels plants to produce affordable, scalable, and resilient synthetic aviation fuel. Since our founding in 2021, we’ve been on a mission to enable widespread sustainable flight, bringing together a world-class team with deep expertise across chemical engineering, power markets, and commercialization in service of decarbonizing aviation and enabling energy resilience.

Our turnkey PIVOT™ system employs a radically simplified plant design that converts carbon dioxide and hydrogen into synthetic jet fuel. The technology enables modular, standardized plants that are faster to build, cheaper to install, and cheaper to run compared to conventional synthetic fuel facilities.

Lydian is actively producing fuel from its pilot plant and scaling to commercial volumes beginning in 2028. The company offers both direct sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply and turnkey production plants to airlines, fuel buyers, and corporate off-takers.
