About the Role
The position involves conducting cultural resource surveys, identifying archaeological sites, and preparing technical reports to meet regulatory requirements under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Responsibilities
- Perform field investigations to locate and assess cultural resources
- Document archaeological sites using standardized forms and digital tools
- Prepare survey reports and site records according to agency guidelines
- Conduct background research using historical and archival sources
- Identify prehistoric and historic period sites in diverse environments
- Work in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act
- Collaborate with project managers on compliance strategies
- Collect and manage spatial data using GPS and GIS platforms
- Follow safety protocols during field operations
- Transport field equipment and supplies to remote locations
- Communicate findings to regulatory agencies and stakeholders
- Maintain accurate field notes and photographic records
- Assist in the development of research designs and work plans
- Participate in coordination meetings with clients and agencies
- Ensure adherence to professional ethical standards
- Conduct pedestrian surveys in varied terrain and weather conditions
- Record site boundaries and features using standardized methods
- Support compliance with federal, state, and territorial regulations
- Prepare cultural resource inventory databases
- Contribute to environmental impact assessments
- Work independently and as part of a field team
- Meet project deadlines and reporting requirements
- Use field equipment such as total stations and drones when applicable
- Follow data management procedures for digital and paper records
- Support tribal consultation efforts when required

Physical Demands
- Must be able to walk long distances over uneven terrain
- Frequent bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 40 pounds
- Work outdoors in hot, humid, and sometimes rainy conditions
- Ability to stand for extended periods during excavation or survey
- Comfort with remote field locations and limited facilities
Travel Requirements
- Regular travel across Puerto Rico is required
- Field assignments may include overnight stays
- Flexible schedule to accommodate project timelines
- Must have reliable transportation and valid driver’s license
- Occasional weekend or evening work may be necessary
