Exostar is hiring a Software Engineer

The Software Engineer will design, build, and deploy production systems in a FedRAMP Moderate and CMMC Level 2 environment. This role emphasizes ownership of complex technical projects, including platform migrations, architectural redesigns, and secure integrations for defense and regulated sectors. Development is driven by AI-assisted tooling and modern cloud-native practices.

Responsibilities

  • Write production code daily using technologies such as Angular/TypeScript, .NET/C#, Python, or other languages suited to the task.
  • Integrate AI coding tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and agentic workflows into daily development processes.
  • Take full ownership of systems from architecture through implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Design solutions that comply with FedRAMP and CMMC requirements without sacrificing development speed.
  • Develop on both Azure Government and commercial cloud using microservices, event-driven patterns, APIs, and data pipelines.
  • Advance stalled initiatives by delivering backlog items such as system migrations, prototypes, legacy replacements, and cross-platform fixes.
  • Lead in building infrastructure as code (using Terraform or Bicep), CI/CD pipelines, and internal tools that improve team velocity.
  • Set the standard for code quality and engineering excellence across the organization.
  • Conduct rapid code reviews, mentor through collaboration, and pair on technically challenging problems.
  • Share effective AI-augmented development practices, including prompting strategies and context management.
  • Produce practical documentation such as READMEs and architectural decision records instead of theoretical presentations.
  • Provide honest, actionable feedback on platform limitations, tooling inefficiencies, and engineering bottlenecks.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies by implementing them in real-world environments with actual data.
  • Identify and resolve critical technical debt that impedes team productivity.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of recent, hands-on software engineering experience.
  • Proven ability to deliver complete systems, not just isolated features.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following: Angular/TypeScript, .NET/C#, Python, or Java.
  • At least one year of experience developing cloud-native applications, preferably on Azure; Azure Government experience is a plus.
  • Comfort working across the full technology stack, from infrastructure to frontend.
  • Regular use of AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar tools.
  • Clear understanding of AI capabilities and limitations in software development.
  • Demonstrated ability to ship software faster and with higher quality using AI assistance.
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous situations by making sound assumptions and moving forward.
  • Strong yet adaptable views on system architecture and developer experience.
  • Clear and precise written communication skills.
  • Experience working in regulated environments such as FedRAMP, CMMC, ITAR, SOC2, or HIPAA.
  • Must be a U.S. Person; sponsorship is not available for this role.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Azure Government (IL2/IL4/IL5), Entra ID, Privileged Identity Management (PIM), managed identities, and Zero Trust principles.
  • Background in identity and access management (IAM), PKI, credentialing, or federated identity systems.
  • History of building developer tools, internal platforms, or shared infrastructure.
  • Industry experience in Aerospace & Defense, Life Sciences, or other regulated SaaS domains.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic AI development, including multi-tool workflows, MCP, and AI-driven testing.
  • A personal prototype or side project showcasing advanced AI-augmented software development.
