UnitedHealth Group / Optum is hiring a Senior Software Engineer

The Senior Software Engineer will design, build, and maintain applications with a focus on performance, security, and scalability. This role leverages cloud platforms, AI-powered automation, and DevOps methodologies to enhance system reliability and support healthcare technology innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain software applications throughout their lifecycle
  • Monitor application performance, analyze logs, and implement alerting systems to detect production issues early
  • Perform vulnerability assessments and implement fixes to strengthen security
  • Collaborate with development teams to recommend and implement proactive improvements
  • Develop and execute disaster recovery and data backup strategies to ensure business continuity
  • Work with engineering teams to establish and optimize CI/CD pipelines for faster and more reliable deployments
  • Conduct regular access reviews and monitor user behavior in production environments
  • Lead initiatives to migrate applications to the cloud and modernize legacy systems
  • Advise on cloud best practices related to security, reliability, and scalability
  • Utilize AI tools to automate processes, analyze development data, and provide intelligent recommendations across the software lifecycle
  • Implement AIOps solutions to analyze logs and metrics, improving system observability and incident response times
  • Contribute to the development of prototypes and large-scale proof-of-concept projects
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of application features and security controls
  • Identify and implement performance optimizations in Java-based applications
  • Support Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) activities
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and integrated systems to establish alerts for failures in dependent applications

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional IT experience
  • Experience developing REST and SOAP APIs using Java, JEE, and Spring Boot
  • Proficiency with MySQL, MongoDB, and relational database systems
  • Familiarity with open-source frameworks, particularly Spring Boot, and testing tools like SoapUI and Postman
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD automation tools such as Jenkins Pipeline and GitHub Actions
  • Knowledge of DevOps and cloud technologies including Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and Azure
  • Understanding of network security components such as firewall rules, F5 load balancers, and API gateways
  • Experience working with messaging platforms like IBM MQ and Apache Kafka
  • Solid understanding of security mechanisms including OAuth tokens and SSL certificates

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. Compensation may vary based on local market, education, experience, and certifications. Equity stock purchase, incentive programs, and 401k contribution are included.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid arrangement with flexibility to work remotely from anywhere in the U.S. Employees based in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C., are required to work in the office at least four days per week.
