Responsibilities
- Establish and verify durability requirements, service-life predictions, and environmental exposure categories
- Choose construction materials and protective solutions—including concrete and shotcrete formulations, supplementary cementitious materials, steel protection methods, grouting compounds, waterproofing systems, sealants, and coatings—in compliance with CSA standards such as A23.1, A23.2, and S6, as well as applicable ACI, ASTM, and EN specifications
- Evaluate material submittals, supplier credentials, trial batches, and mock-up installations
- Design and analyze lab and field tests including rapid chloride permeability, bulk resistivity, chloride diffusion, carbonation depth, ASR control, sulfate resistance, freeze-thaw performance, petrographic analysis, adhesion strength, permeability or leakage tests, and rebar corrosion or half-cell potential assessments
- Interpret test outcomes to provide actionable insights, acceptance judgments, and remediation steps
- Support construction teams by addressing RFIs and resolving on-site technical queries
- Diagnose and resolve issues related to material performance deviations
- Improve curing techniques and concrete placement procedures
- Ensure compliance via inspection and test plans, batch plant audits, production surveillance, and traceability of as-built conditions
- Support risk assessment and change management by documenting assumptions related to material durability
- Monitor and record specification variances
- Provide guidance on long-term performance and maintenance requirements based on material choices
- Produce clear, concise technical documentation for project stakeholders including clients and contractors
