About the Role

Mapbox is hiring a Principal Software Development Engineer for its Maps organization to provide strategic technical direction and oversee architecture and execution. This role drives technical excellence, sets the vision, and aligns engineering efforts with company goals.

What You'll Do

  • Set and guide the long-term technical direction and roadmap for the Maps organization.
  • Lead and mentor a global team of ~80 engineers through design, development, and execution of critical engineering components.
  • Collaborate across teams to uncover and align complex technical requirements, evaluate design trade-offs, and influence product direction.
  • Evaluate, prototype, and roll out new technologies and frameworks to cultivate a culture of innovation.
  • Engage directly with customers to understand their needs, travel as needed, and relay insights back to the team.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of mapping data by implementing engineering-driven processes for validation and improvement.
  • Collaborate with data acquisition and engineering teams to enhance data reliability and precision.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of competitor offerings, market dynamics, and industry trends.
  • Influence the AI strategy for the entire company and provide technical guidance on using AI to improve development efficiency.
  • Drive the development of secure, frictionless product experiences while designing and building large-scale systems from the ground up.

What We're Looking For

  • 15+ years of engineering experience.
  • Extensive experience coding in languages such as C/C++, Python, Javascript, Typescript.
  • Deep knowledge of data structures, algorithms, design patterns, memory management, multithreading, and performance optimization.
  • Extensive experience with cloud database services (AWS RDS, Google Cloud Spanner, Azure SQL) and deploying/managing databases in cloud environments.
  • Strong passion for clean code and robust architecture.
  • Experience leading globally distributed engineering teams.
  • Experience collaborating across teams and domains including product, executives, design, and key stakeholders.
  • Strong written and vocal communication skills.
  • Experience bringing products to market, including coordinating deadlines, setting pricing, developing marketing strategy, and enabling support teams.

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience in Maps and/or Navigation.
  • Advanced degree (Masters and/or PhD) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.

  • Compensation range: $269,450 - $364,550 for most US locations, 5% to 10% higher for higher cost of labor locations.
