Responsibilities
- Apply deep distributed systems knowledge to design, build, and operate core parts of the next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering, directly affecting customer experience globally.
- Enhance Elasticsearch components that enable concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
- Maintain the cluster coordination system to ensure high performance despite nodes joining or leaving and data relocation, while preserving system safety and liveness.
- Push the boundaries of the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes that Elasticsearch can currently manage.
- Investigate various issues, including performance or concurrency problems, and propose solutions.
- Assist support engineers with the most challenging problems.
- Own operational investigations from start to finish until performance or stability issues are fully resolved.
Requirements
- Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
- Strong skills in core Java, familiarity with the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs, and knowledge of newer language features.
- Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
- Experience building large-scale distributed systems rather than using off-the-shelf services.
- Experience building and debugging complex features with broad impact that run on multiple machines.
- Ability to own projects from beginning to end, including technical design and collaboration with others to develop needed components.
- Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers.
- Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code, while retaining ownership of final outcomes.
- Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and seamlessly transition between different projects, codebases, or teams based on business priorities.
- Ability to work autonomously, drive decisions and results in a distributed team through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
