Ottimate is seeking a Principal Engineer to architect, build, and scale our payment processing and financial transaction systems. You will own the technical design for high-volume payment and expense management platforms, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and high-performance.
What You'll Do
- Architect and develop robust, scalable payment and expense management systems.
- Lead technical design discussions and own backend service architecture decisions for critical payment infrastructure.
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers to define the user experience for payment products.
- Drive best practices for development with a strong emphasis on security and compliance in payment systems.
- Evaluate and implement new tools and technologies to improve engineering efficiency and payment processing.
- Troubleshoot and optimize the performance, reliability, and scalability of existing payment systems.
- Contribute to technical roadmaps and long-term planning with engineering leadership.
- Support the Product team in defining and researching potential new avenues for revenue.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of professional experience building web applications with a focus on backend development.
- 5+ years of experience in the US fintech industry, with a proven track record of building and scaling high-volume payment products.
- Ability to perform hands-on engineering while leading a team of software engineers and product managers.
- Deep expertise in building complex software systems across backend and frontend.
- Extensive experience debugging complex database performance issues, especially in payment systems.
- Strong understanding of US payment technology, including compliance regulations, risk management, and security best practices.
- Extensive background developing and scaling B2B SaaS solutions, ideally within fintech.
- Strong communication skills to explain complex technical topics related to payments and compliance to the entire team.
- Product sense to prioritize customer experience and build the correct supporting infrastructure for payment products.

- Expertise in Python and Django.
- Experience working in an early-stage startup.
- Extensive experience building complex payments or finance stack solutions.
- Expertise with the AWS ecosystem, particularly services for high-volume transaction processing.
