About the Role
This role blends maritime command with naturalist responsibilities, requiring a USCG-credentialed captain to safely operate small expedition vessels while also guiding guests through wildlife and ecological experiences in wild, often remote destinations.
Responsibilities
- Operate and navigate small vessels under 25+ tons in compliance with USCG regulations
- Ensure vessel safety, maintenance, and readiness for daily operations
- Lead guest excursions in diverse marine and coastal environments
- Deliver interpretive presentations on local wildlife, geology, and ecosystems
- Collaborate with expedition leadership to plan daily itineraries
- Monitor weather and sea conditions to determine safe operating windows
- Supervise embarkation and disembarkation procedures for guests
- Maintain accurate navigation and operational logs
- Respond to emergencies using established safety protocols
- Enforce environmental protection practices during field operations
- Serve as a role model for sustainable and responsible tourism
- Assist in training crew on safety and guest engagement procedures
- Manage fuel, supplies, and equipment inventories for vessel operations
- Conduct pre-departure safety briefings for passengers
- Navigate challenging conditions including polar and tropical regions
- Support scientific and conservation initiatives during voyages
- Document wildlife sightings and environmental observations
- Adapt communication style for diverse international audiences
- Uphold all maritime safety standards and company policies
- Work flexible hours based on expedition schedules and environmental conditions
Compensation
Competitive salary commensurate with experience, including room and board during deployment
Work Arrangement
Full-time, rotational schedule with extended periods at sea and time off between contracts
Team
Part of a multidisciplinary expedition team including naturalists, photographers, and dive specialists
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to climb ladders, traverse uneven terrain, and board small boats in motion
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods
- Able to function effectively in extreme temperatures and high winds
- Good vision, hearing, and balance essential for safe operations
