AECOM is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to join its Data Center and Mission Critical team for the east region. This is a remote, hands-on, client-facing role focused on designing HVAC and heat rejection systems for high-profile, fast-paced data center projects with opportunities for career growth.
What You'll Do
- Developing and designing Heat Rejection and HVAC systems specifically tailored for data centers
- Considering type of cooling requirement as air cooled or direct fluid cooled
- Assessing associated cooling loads
- Ensuring future flexibility of the system to accommodate variable heat distribution scenarios
- Designing for phased construction and operation
- Managing airflow
- Controlling humidity
- Designing system redundancy providing concurrent maintainability
- Optimizing energy efficiency
- Ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices
- Selecting appropriate air/water side cooling systems for data centers
- Selecting Fan wall units, computer room air handlers (CRAHs), chilled water systems, DX systems and CRAC units, in-row cooling, and containment solutions
- Conducting internal CFD simulations to optimize airflow distribution
- Performing transient period analysis
- Identifying hotspots
- Ensuring efficient cooling throughout the data center
- Conducting external CFD on individual buildings and/or campus-wide
- Simulating effects of different electrical and mechanical components on each other
- Evaluating effects on design day selection criteria capacity of each component
- Preparing and/or directing preparation of models for CFD analysis
- Analyzing CFD results to recommend design modifications
- Optimizing Heat rejection and HVAC system performance
- Coordinating required changes and resulting effects with other trades on project
- Designing HVAC systems with redundancy and fault-tolerant features
- Ensuring continuous operation of the data center in the event of equipment failure or maintenance activities
- Designing backup cooling systems
- Designing automatic switchover mechanisms
- Implementing monitoring systems
- Performing heat load calculations for data centers
- Determining cooling requirements based on IT equipment, power density, anticipated growth, and phasing of construction and operational steps
- Conducting capacity planning to ensure HVAC system can accommodate future expansions and upgrades
- Performing HVAC loads for admin and common sections of the facility
- Implementing energy-efficient HVAC design strategies
- Utilizing economizers, variable speed drives, energy recovery systems
- Optimizing airflow management techniques to minimize energy consumption
- Supporting sustainability initiatives
- Ensuring data center's air quality is maintained at optimal levels
- Designing appropriate filtration systems
- Implementing air quality monitoring mechanisms
- Addressing concerns related to particulate matter, humidity control, and contaminant removal
- Protecting sensitive IT equipment
- Collaborating with electrical engineers and mechanical engineers
- Integrating heat rejection and HVAC system seamlessly with electrical infrastructure
- Integrating with UPS systems, emergency power systems, fire suppression systems, and other critical infrastructure components
