Responsibilities
- Supervise approximately 10 engineers across multiple US locations, overseeing career development, performance reviews, hiring, and daily team well-being.
- Remain technically engaged by writing code, reviewing architectural decisions, and removing obstacles to technical progress on Protego roadmap tasks.
- Collaborate with Product Owners to define and prioritize the Risk Engineering roadmap.
- Manage sprint execution and Jira maintenance, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and velocity monitoring.
- Handle stakeholder relationships with Risk Operations, Compliance, Payments, and Identity teams.
- Take responsibility for AWS cost management for the team's services, tracking spending and driving optimizations to support sustainability and green infrastructure goals.
- Promote AI-assisted engineering practices within the team, utilizing tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to enhance development speed and code quality.
- Represent the team in cross-functional planning sessions and proactively escalate obstacles.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of hands-on professional experience building commercial products using Java.
- At least 2 years of management experience leading and mentoring engineers on distributed teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or an equivalent field.
- Substantial experience designing and building REST services and familiarity with microservice architectures.
- Proven experience designing and building scalable, high-throughput, low-latency systems.
- Comfort with relational and NoSQL database design and SQL.
- Knowledge of security best practices for web application development, such as OWASP.
- Experience working in a cloud environment, preferably AWS, including cost management and optimization.
- Experience using Agile methodologies to plan and deliver functional increments.
- Working knowledge of core ML concepts (precision, recall, F-score, model training/evaluation) to effectively collaborate with the Data Science team on risk model integration.
- Strong grasp of AI/LLM concepts, including agents and agentic workflows, with the ability to evaluate and lead adoption of appropriate AI solutions for engineering challenges.
- Comfort working with data to identify and analyze fraud patterns, translating findings into engineering and product decisions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Nice to Have
- Experience with UI frameworks like Angular and React.
- Experience with fraud/risk systems, payments, or high-scale transactional platforms.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science.
