Fluidstack is hiring a Lead Mechanical Engineer, Data Center Design

Responsibilities

  • Define and oversee the full mechanical cooling strategy, spanning from chip-level thermal management to atmospheric heat rejection systems.
  • Create and maintain foundational design documents, including mechanical specifications, standard drawings, and operational sequences for all cooling infrastructure.
  • Lead architectural decisions on coolant composition, chiller types, CDU elimination, and medium-voltage integration.
  • Advance energy efficiency through innovations like free cooling, water-side economizers, and waste heat recovery to achieve top-tier PUE and WUE metrics.
  • Set thermal and hydraulic standards for high-density GPU racks using direct liquid cooling, rear-door heat exchangers, and hybrid cooling solutions.
  • Drive technological advancement and innovation within mechanical and cooling system design.
  • Specify modular, prefabricated mechanical components for fast deployment with minimal on-site work, including cooling units and piping systems.
  • Partner with manufacturing and procurement to assess new cooling technologies and potential suppliers, including advanced chiller platforms and refrigerant systems.
  • Collaborate with BIM and structural engineering teams to integrate prefab modules into building designs with accurate models and material lists.
  • Lead mechanical design execution across multiple data center projects from concept to issued-for-construction drawings, coordinating with external consultants and internal leads.
  • Ensure quality of mechanical deliverables at key design stages; manage RFIs, design changes, and cost-saving initiatives during construction.
  • Develop detailed project documentation such as P&IDs, equipment and valve schedules, piping layouts, and cooling yard plans.
  • Support factory testing, on-site quality checks, and system commissioning, including loop flushing, passivation, and pressure testing.
  • Perform CFD simulations and thermal modeling to verify airflow, pressure loss, and temperature performance for each deployment.
  • Build and lead a high-performing mechanical engineering team, setting goals, mentoring staff, and promoting technical excellence and speed.
  • Manage vendor relationships for chillers, pumps, dry coolers, and coolant systems, ensuring competitive sourcing and adherence to delivery, quality, and performance standards.
  • Represent mechanical engineering in cross-functional collaboration with electrical, controls, construction, operations, and customer-facing engineering teams.
  • Engage directly with client technical teams to align on cooling requirements, thermal specs, and integration for GPU and TPU hardware.
