Responsibilities
- Building Inspector I: Under direct supervision, conduct routine inspections and learn inspection policies, methods, and techniques.
- Building Inspector I: This role is alternatively staffed with Building Inspector II; incumbents may advance after gaining experience and showing proficiency.
- Building Inspector II: Perform full duties including inspections, plan checks, and enforcement of a broad range of building and related codes.
- Building Inspector II: Work requires independence and discretion in both field inspections and plan reviews.
- Building Inspector III: Perform full duties as in Inspector I and II, including architectural plan checks and code enforcement.
- Building Inspector III: Work requires independence and discretion in administrative support, field inspections, and plan examination.
Requirements
- At least 2 ICC Residential Certifications
- Minimum of 2 years experience in residential/building construction or as a building inspector
- Working knowledge of International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, and National Electrical Code
- Working knowledge of current construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
- Ability to detect hazards and violations, and recommend corrective measures during field inspections
- Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, consistency, tact, and courtesy in field inspections
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to remain calm, objective, and impartial under stressful conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, contractors, and the public
- Competent use of laptop, word processing and inspection software; motor vehicle; portable radio; phone; ladder or scaffolding; tape measure; level; hand tools; and reference codes
- Work is mostly in field settings with considerable outdoor work inspecting land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities
- Hand-eye coordination needed to operate testing instruments, tools, computers, and office equipment
- Duties occasionally require climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds
- Must have a high school diploma
- Must have a valid Driver License
- Must successfully complete standard background investigation
