Canadian Medical Protective Association is hiring a HR Advisor - Disability, Leave, & Employee Experience

Responsibilities

  • Oversee administration of employee leaves, including short- and long-term disability, parental leave, job-protected absences, and unpaid time off.
  • Offer guidance and support to managers and employees throughout the leave lifecycle, handling sensitive and complex situations effectively.
  • Submit disability claims to insurance providers and coordinate with case managers for seamless leave processing.
  • Develop accommodation and return-to-work plans in collaboration with employees, leaders, and insurers, consulting HR partners or management when needed.
  • Manage approvals and documentation for parental, job-protected, and unpaid leaves.
  • Ensure accurate and timely entry of all leave-related data into the Workday system.
  • Analyze leave trends and patterns to identify risks and recommend improvements to policies and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Lead the design and execution of the organization’s orientation and onboarding program for new hires.
  • Ensure new employees complete pre-start onboarding tasks in Workday and follow up as necessary.
  • Conduct onboarding sessions with new hires during the first and third weeks of employment.
  • Respond to onboarding-related questions and provide ongoing support during the initial employment period.
  • Ensure distribution and completion of the 3-month stay survey and follow up accordingly.
  • Evaluate feedback from stay surveys and HR check-ins to inform annual reporting and program enhancements.
  • Monitor changes in provincial and regional employment legislation.
  • Track updates to employment laws and advise the People Services Manager and P&C team proactively.
  • Research legal changes and initiate updates to HR policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Work with legal counsel to revise and finalize HR policies and compliance documents.
  • Coordinate the organization’s accessibility policy and multi-year plan, including government-mandated reporting.
  • Partner with internal teams to update accessibility policies and submit AODA compliance reports every three years.
  • Consult legal experts during revisions of accessibility policies and plans.
  • Answer employee inquiries about accessibility policies and initiatives.
  • Deliver and improve HR compliance training programs.
  • Facilitate recurring Workplace Violence and Harassment Prevention training sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations in Ontario, Québec, and other applicable regions through training, risk assessments, and monitoring legislative changes.
  • Coordinate mandatory compliance training delivery via third-party vendors and follow up with employees or managers to ensure completion.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of progressive HR experience focused on leave management and employee experience in a corporate setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or a related field.
  • Proven track record in administering various types of employee leaves, including pregnancy and parental leave and caregiver leave.
  • At least two years managing complex disability claims and accommodation cases, requiring sound judgment and critical thinking.
  • Solid understanding of employment laws across multiple provinces and jurisdictions, including the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, and Health and Safety legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, implement, and evaluate HR policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Strong client-service orientation and interpersonal abilities, with a history of building positive working relationships.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and deliver empathetic, tactful, and diplomatic service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience leading presentations.
  • Capacity to work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders to advance HR initiatives.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to maintain high productivity while managing competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Awareness of system-wide impacts when entering data or making changes in Workday.
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to identify opportunities and propose solutions independently.
  • Ability to work autonomously within a hybrid team structure.
  • Proven success in building strong relationships with key internal stakeholders.
  • Proficient in HRIS systems, particularly Workday, with a system-oriented approach.
  • Experience conducting HR data analysis and environmental scanning.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Demonstrates discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
  • Adaptable to changing circumstances and proactive in addressing emerging challenges.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.

Nice to Have

  • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) or Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation preferred.
  • Prior experience managing disability claims in an insurance setting is a strong asset.
  • Advanced proficiency in HRIS systems, especially Workday, is highly valued.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is a strong asset.
