Mercator is hiring a Founding AI Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Build core pipelines that transform messy, unstructured inputs into clean, structured, reliable data
  • Own end-to-end ingestion and reasoning: extracting data from varied sources, interpreting and mapping it into structured schemas, reconciling inconsistencies, validating correctness, and indexing it for retrieval and grounding
  • Design LLM-driven reasoning workflows
  • Build RAG pipelines
  • Architect the gold-standard data store that becomes the trusted source for everything downstream
  • Partner closely with product and application engineers to define data contracts, build APIs, and ensure simulation and customer-facing features are backed by consistent, explainable, and production-grade data
  • Prototype quickly, iterate with real customer inputs, debug ambiguous failures, and harden systems to scale with product complexity

Requirements

  • Experience building data systems that transform unstructured inputs into structured, reliable data
  • Ability to design and implement LLM-driven reasoning workflows and RAG pipelines
  • Strong systems design skills to architect scalable, production-grade data stores
  • Experience working with messy, real-world data sources and reconciling inconsistencies
  • Ability to define data contracts and build APIs in collaboration with product and application engineers
  • Experience debugging ambiguous system failures and hardening systems for scale

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company workation: work from a fun destination (e.g., skiing, surfing) two weeks a year

Additional Information

  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization
  • H-1B transfers supported

About company
Mercator

Mercator is transforming legacy supply chains into intelligent, responsive systems. Millions of decisions are made daily by thousands of actors with competing incentives, under conditions that never hold still — and yet, most of these decisions are still made in spreadsheets.

The company is building the decision layer to orchestrate global supply chains, using advanced AI and systems thinking to enable faster, more adaptive responses to real-world volatility. Mercator aims to replace outdated processes with intelligent infrastructure that learns and evolves.

Founded by engineers from Google and Stanford, Mercator combines deep technical expertise with firsthand experience in AI, robotics, and supply chain moonshots. The team is focused on creating systems that operate in complex, uncertain environments — from underwater species tracking to end-to-end supply chain automation.
