Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the engineering team to ensure successful broadcast of programming through expert installation, maintenance, operation, updates, and intricate repairs.
- Lead operation, testing, and maintenance of advanced broadcast equipment including audio processors, transmission systems, EAS equipment, receivers, monitors, electrical systems, and optimize signal and sound per ministry guidelines.
- Foster a culture of excellence by identifying opportunities to improve system performance, reliability, and efficiency, focusing on IP-based, modern microwave, and Low Earth Orbit satellite solutions.
- Serve as primary expert in diagnosing and resolving complex technical faults on equipment and systems down to the component level using advanced analytical methods.
- Partner and communicate with engineers, including contract engineers, to achieve critical objectives.
- Act as dedicated mentor and escalation point for junior Broadcast Engineers, supporting their technical knowledge and professional development.
- Complete and submit all required administrative documentation, such as timecards, expense reports, vehicle logs, budgeting documents, and other records by deadlines.
- Use and maintain asset management, work order, and ticketing system software to log activities, track inventory, and update status efficiently.
- Respond promptly and professionally to emails, texts, and phone calls, ensuring clear communication on operational status, project updates, and other work matters.
- Maintain organized digital and physical records for compliance and operational continuity.
- Maintain expert-level understanding of FCC rules and regulations, ensuring equipment and operations are compliant and uphold safety standards.
- Actively champion the Injury Prevention and Safety program, ensuring strict adherence to safety standards.
- Strictly adhere to lock out-tag out procedures.
- Serve as Chief Operator or Engineer for assigned broadcast stations, fulfilling all regulatory responsibilities.
- Conduct mandatory comprehensive on-site visits to each assigned transmitter site at least once per quarter.
- Provide immediate expert response for unplanned outages, emergency repairs, and critical events requiring on-site presence.
- Perform essential maintenance and troubleshooting on non-broadcast equipment such as generators, HVAC, and minor electrical or plumbing to ensure site functionality.
- Undertake trips to remote sites for complex installations or critical repairs, or to the campus for specialized training or project leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent technical studies in electronics, broadcast communications, or related field; or minimum five years directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum six years demonstrated expert-level experience in troubleshooting, installing, repairing, and maintaining complex broadcast electronic equipment or comparable relevant experience.
- Thorough understanding of broadcast air-chain components, including complex system interactions and IP-based signal distribution.
- Intermediate networking skills in TCP/IP, routing, and switching, with ability to diagnose common network issues.
- Advanced understanding of modern microwave and Low Earth Orbit satellite technologies and their integration.
- Deep understanding of radio frequency emissions, interference mitigation, and regulatory compliance, serving as escalation point for complex RF challenges.
- Expertise in soldering and desoldering electronic components, including precision work.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable broadcast-related FCC rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform complex calculations for common broadcast-related formulas.
- Advanced proficiency with standard broadcast test equipment such as VOMs, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other common software.
- Proven ability to systematically and logically address multiple highly complex technical problems, often requiring innovative solutions.
- Ability to apply sophisticated common-sense understanding to carry out complex instructions and think strategically from abstract problems to practical solutions.
