About the Role
The dispatcher will oversee daily drayage operations, assign loads to drivers, monitor delivery progress, and resolve scheduling conflicts to maintain on-time performance.
Responsibilities
- Assign container hauling jobs to qualified drivers based on location and availability
- Track shipment movements from port terminals to final destinations
- Communicate with truck drivers to confirm pickup and delivery times
- Update dispatch logs with real-time status changes
- Coordinate with rail depots to schedule intermodal transfers
- Respond to customer inquiries about shipment status
- Resolve delays caused by traffic, equipment issues, or scheduling conflicts
- Ensure compliance with hours-of-service regulations for drivers
- Maintain accurate records of load assignments and delivery confirmations
- Use GPS and TMS platforms to monitor fleet activity
- Optimize routing to reduce empty miles and improve efficiency
- Notify customers of delivery windows and any schedule changes
- Work with terminal staff to confirm gate times and documentation
- Manage after-hours on-call dispatch responsibilities as scheduled
- Support safety and compliance audits with proper documentation
- Assist in onboarding new drivers and contractors
- Report operational issues to management promptly
- Monitor fuel and maintenance costs related to dispatch decisions
- Follow up on missing or delayed container check-in/check-out reports
- Ensure all required paperwork is completed for cross-border moves
- Handle customs broker communications when required for international shipments
- Maintain updated contact lists for terminals, drivers, and clients
- Escalate unresolved service issues to operations leads
- Participate in performance reviews for driver personnel
- Adapt to last-minute customer requests while maintaining schedule integrity
