Syngenta is hiring an Engineering Lead - AI SDK

About the Role

Shape how developers integrate AI across a global enterprise by designing and building core infrastructure, leading a specialized engineering team, and setting technical standards for AI-native applications used by tens of thousands of employees worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement the Intent Router, a high-accuracy system that identifies user intent and routes tasks to appropriate domain-specific agents.
  • Develop a federated session context store to maintain state across multi-turn interactions while enforcing data isolation between business units.
  • Build a secure system for dynamic prompt injection and governance, ensuring safe and controlled use of AI prompts.
  • Create robust, reusable enterprise connectors for key data platforms including Databricks, Snowflake, ServiceNow, and internal SAP systems.
  • Optimize SDK performance and usability in both Python and TypeScript, prioritizing developer experience for internal engineering teams.
  • Lead and grow a specialized engineering squad, setting benchmarks for code quality, documentation, and modern CI/CD practices in AI development.
  • Mentor engineers and influence technical excellence across the organization, fostering a culture of high standards and empowered engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated success in building infrastructure, libraries, or large-scale platforms.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading engineering teams with strong delivery outcomes.
  • Active contributor to codebases, conducting deep design reviews and setting technical direction for the team.
  • Proven experience developing or maintaining SDKs, APIs, or developer-focused tooling.
  • Solid understanding of AI/ML concepts including large language models, embeddings, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and agent frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex.
  • Proficiency in at least one major programming language: Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or Go.
  • Experience designing APIs with attention to versioning, backward compatibility, and long-term maintainability.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with multi-modal AI systems involving vision, speech, or document processing.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based AI platforms such as Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, or Google Vertex AI.
  • Background contributing to or maintaining open-source developer tools or public SDKs.
  • Knowledge of enterprise security practices including authentication, rate limiting, and secure SDK distribution patterns.

The Mission

This role goes beyond writing code — it’s about defining how AI is built and used across one of the world’s largest agriculture companies. The organization is transitioning from isolated AI experiments to a unified, high-performance AI SDK that will serve over 50,000 employees in more than 90 countries. As the Engineering Leader, you will architect foundational components, lead a team of specialists, and establish the technical standards for integrating large language models, agent systems, and intelligent workflows. You will build the tools that empower every internal engineering team to develop, deploy, and scale agentic AI solutions efficiently.

The Challenge

This is a hands-on builder role requiring deep technical leadership. Responsibilities include designing core AI infrastructure: building an intent classification and routing engine, creating a federated memory system for multi-turn interactions, implementing secure prompt governance, developing reusable data connectors, optimizing SDK performance in Python and TypeScript, leading a high-performing engineering team, and mentoring across the organization to elevate technical standards.

Your Impact: The "Multiplier" Effect

Your work will not ship a single product but enable dozens. The SDK you lead will support AI agents used across six global business units. By delivering reusable components for routing, memory, and governance, you will reduce development cycles from months to weeks. As the technical authority, your architectural choices will define the standard for how AI is implemented company-wide.

Why This Role

This position offers high leverage — your code becomes the foundation for every AI product in the company. You’ll work alongside top-tier engineers in an environment of high autonomy and impact, operating at the intersection of cutting-edge AI capabilities and developer experience, one of the most dynamic areas in modern software development.

What's it like to be part of Syngenta?

The company is a global leader in agricultural innovation, operating in over 90 countries with a mission to help farmers feed a growing population sustainably. Technology teams are central to this mission, building digital, data, and AI solutions at scale. This role offers the chance to work at the forefront of ag-tech, in a fast-paced, idea-driven global environment with real autonomy and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Other

  • You believe great engineering leadership means clarity over cleverness — simplifying problems, prioritizing effectively, and communicating objectively.
  • You lead by empowering, not directing — setting context, raising the bar, and trusting your team to deliver.
  • You are curious, not certain — asking thoughtful questions and learning from engineers and stakeholders alike.
  • You focus on outcomes — measuring success by impact, not effort or activity.
