Responsibilities
- Engages in a structured training program featuring classroom instruction, hands-on lab sessions, emergency response simulations, and orientation activities to prepare for graduation and advancement to EMS Medic - Communications.
- Builds expertise in assessing emergency calls to decide appropriate actions, including delivering pre-arrival medical guidance and using standardized protocols to evaluate medical urgency and caller location.
- Gains proficiency in evaluating emergency situations over the phone and delivering accurate pre-arrival medical instructions as authorized by the Medical Director.
- Learns to operate diverse communication systems and computerized tools used in handling 911 medical calls, including coordinating EMS units and STAR flight helicopter responses.
- Acquires the ability to accurately record patient care details and complete required documentation in compliance with standards.
Other
- This role is designated as essential, requiring availability to work during emergencies, holidays, and severe weather conditions when other city operations may be suspended.
- All new hires begin as Cadets and attend a fully paid 8-week training academy.
- Upon successful completion of the EMS Academy, cadets earn certification as Medic – Communications, meeting requirements under Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code.
- After completing a twelve-month probationary period as a Medic – Communications, the employee gains full civil service status and associated protections.
