About the Role

Scholastic is hiring a remote Product Designer to join our Tangerine Press publishing team. You will be responsible for creating, developing, and designing high-quality, high kid-appeal nonfiction books, activity kits, stationery, and school supplies, primarily for distribution through Scholastic’s Book Fairs and Book Clubs.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the design and production of a variety of projects per season, including books, kits, non-book items, and packaging, working closely with the Art Director and senior staff.
  • Create print-ready files that follow printer specifications and provided templates.
  • Produce 2D and 3D illustrations and product mock-up designs with dimensions for proposed stationery and school supplies projects.
  • Hire and art direct freelance designers, guiding them from initial templates through photo licensing and pre-flighting files.
  • Create design schedules for assigned projects and participate in weekly production and smaller team meetings.
  • Assist with the layout and design of two seasonal trend presentations showing how trends can be implemented into future products.
  • Collaborate across production, editorial, and safety teams to ensure design work meets all objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to company branding and image standards, including following all processes for licensing images and fonts.
  • Be involved in every stage of preparing and pre-flighting digital files for pre-press and work with vendors through to mass production.
  • Manage archival of files for all completed projects and assist the design department with archival of projects from past seasons.
  • Contribute to editorial brainstorms and product pitches to develop high-novelty, trend-right product lists.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 2 years design experience in an art department as a Designer or equivalent role, within publishing, stationery, packaging, or the toy industry.
  • Thorough knowledge and work experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator).
  • Strong organization, verbal and written communication skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines for multiple projects while working independently and to thrive in a remote work environment.
  • Ability to conceptualize ideas, sketch, and understand 3D packaging, such as cardboard display boxes.
  • A portfolio featuring a variety of design work that demonstrates knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, and ability in layout, design, typography, and/or illustration.

Nice to Have

  • BFA or similar degree, or certification from a technical school in Graphic Design or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Workfront and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Team & Environment

You will be part of Scholastic’s Tangerine Press publishing team, reporting to and receiving guidance from the Art Director, senior staff, and Associate Art Director.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Salary range: $55,000 to $62,000 annually.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates in any U.S. location.
