Responsibilities
- Administer and support PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server systems to guarantee uptime, efficiency, and data protection.
- Continuously monitor database performance, resolve issues, conduct root-cause investigations, and contribute to an on-call support schedule.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to design efficient database schemas, indexes, and queries.
- Implement and validate reliable backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures that meet defined recovery point and recovery time objectives.
- Carry out database deployments, version upgrades, and data migrations in both local data centers and cloud-managed services.
- Enforce security standards including role-based access, data encryption, and audit logging, while maintaining accurate operational documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or relevant field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Three to five years of experience managing production databases using PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Proven experience supporting databases in on-premise environments and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Solid understanding of database architecture, indexing strategies, transaction management, and performance optimization using execution plans and database monitoring tools.
- Demonstrated ability to execute backup, restore, and high availability or disaster recovery procedures under real-world conditions.
- Experience handling critical incidents in high-pressure environments with effective communication across technical and business teams.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with monitoring and observability platforms such as Solarwinds DPA, Redgate SQL Monitor, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, GCP Monitoring, or DataDog.
- Experience using automation and infrastructure-as-code tools like PowerShell, Python, Terraform, or Ansible, and version-controlled database migration tools like Flyway or Liquibase.
- Background in insurance, financial services, or handling personally identifiable information, or prior work with software used in similar domains.
