Mercury Insurance is hiring a Data Scientist - Modeling(Retention, Churn, CLV)

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business units including underwriting, claims, marketing, and advertising to understand their processes and needs.
  • Identify relevant data sources for business issues and opportunities, conduct assigned project work, and perform ad-hoc analyses using statistical and machine learning algorithms to enhance business processes and decision-making.
  • Work independently while receiving guidance from senior data scientists and management.
  • Engage in discussions with colleagues regarding analysis requirements.
  • Review and discuss analyses with colleagues and managers as needed.
  • Provide data support for projects and collaborate closely with business teams on implementation through analytical or IT processes.
  • Develop monitoring procedures and reports for implemented projects, and identify opportunities to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Understand data sources from various applications and data infrastructure.
  • Retrieve large volumes of structured or unstructured data from multiple sources and apply advanced data manipulation techniques to prepare data for analysis.
  • Review data for accuracy and optimize data retrieval methods when necessary.
  • Create, maintain, and improve dynamic reports, graphs, and charts using dashboards, programming, and MS Excel.
  • Develop procedures to streamline analysis workflows.
  • Establish automated processes to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
  • Answer questions and conduct ad-hoc analyses related to business reports.
  • Communicate proactively, clearly, and consistently with subject matter experts, EBI, IT, and management across functional areas to understand each job function.
  • Through communication, expand understanding of processes and key performance indicators that drive business results in each area and overall.
  • Create presentations that break down identified problems and potential solutions.
  • Actively participate in meetings to present findings and recommendations.
  • Possess a strong background in creating and explaining meaningful graphs and be skilled in assembling and delivering PowerPoint presentations.
  • Maintain regular attendance at work on a full-time schedule of at least 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in data mining and data/statistical analysis.
  • At least 2 years of experience with SQL and statistical software packages (Python, R, SAS).
  • At least 1 year of experience working as a data scientist or in a similar role, with a proven track record in data processing, predictive modeling, and machine learning techniques.
  • At least 1 year of experience in insurance or financial services.
  • Demonstrated solid skills in data mining, machine learning, programming, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based advanced data and analytics environments.
  • Passion for problem-solving and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Ability to think conceptually, analytically, and creatively.
  • Experience using R, Python, and other programming languages.
  • Strong data skills and ability to work with large structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Experience in predictive modeling, general model building, and validation procedures.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
