Providence Health Care is hiring a Coding Standards and Data Quality Specialist

Responsibilities

  • Leads initiatives related to coding standards and data quality, offering expert advice to health information management coders and team members on coding workflows, patient documentation protocols, and related procedures.
  • Creates, updates, and delivers training resources for new employees, students on practicum or co-op placements, and returning staff to promote uniform adherence to coding guidelines.
  • Serves as the main point of contact with external agencies including CIHI, BCRCP, and the BC Trauma Registry, handling coding inquiries, adopting updated standards, and disseminating changes to internal stakeholders.
  • Partners with coding coordinators, leadership, health information management units, and analytics teams to maintain accuracy and consistency in coded clinical data and ensure compliance with provincial and national reporting requirements.
  • Establishes and manages coding and data quality policies, documentation, and operational manuals, while leading audit processes using validated quality improvement frameworks.
  • Contributes to hiring and professional development by helping design coding competency evaluations, detecting trends in data inaccuracies, and proposing focused training interventions.
  • Engages with interdisciplinary teams in program design, ensuring coded health data aligns with evolving models of care delivery; provides in-person support when necessary and carries out related tasks as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Leads coding standards and data quality initiatives, providing expert guidance to HIM Coders and staff on coding processes, patient record standards, and related practices.
  • Develops, maintains, and delivers training programs and materials for new hires, practicum and co-op students, and returning staff to ensure consistent application of coding standards.
  • Acts as the primary liaison with CIHI, BCRCP, BC Trauma Registry, and other databases, managing coding queries, implementing new or revised standards, and communicating updates to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with Coding Coordinators, Leadership, HIM teams, and reporting/analytics units to ensure the accuracy and integrity of coded patient data and alignment with Ministry and CIHI requirements.
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and manuals related to coding standards and data quality, and oversees quality audit processes using evidence-based quality improvement methodologies.
  • Supports recruitment and staff development by assisting in the creation of coding proficiency assessments, identifying data quality issues, and recommending targeted training initiatives.
  • Works with cross-functional teams and participates in program development, ensuring codified data supports emerging healthcare delivery models; provides on-site support as needed and performs other related duties.
