Responsibilities
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including architects, engineers, and specialty consultants
- Lead initial planning and design efforts for behavioral health facilities in community, justice, and civic contexts
- Design functional spatial layouts that incorporate therapeutic environments, de-escalation techniques, and safety protocols
- Formulate research-supported design approaches that advance mental health treatment, recovery, and reintegration
- Design facilities for adult crisis intervention, substance use recovery, sobering, and residential treatment
- Ensure all designs uphold safety for clients and staff while fostering healing environments
- Apply sustainable design methods and adhere to WELL Building Standard principles in behavioral health projects
- Partner with diverse teams to embed specialized safety and security systems
- Incorporate trauma-informed design methodologies into project planning
- Create spaces that meet clinical needs while aligning with trauma-responsive care frameworks
- Perform assessments of existing facilities and formulate programming strategies
- Produce detailed space planning documents and design standards
- Lead engagement activities with stakeholders and facilitate collaborative design workshops
- Offer expert guidance on behavioral health design codes, standards, and best practices
- Assist in cost modeling and phased implementation planning for behavioral health projects
- Establish evaluation metrics for post-occupancy performance of behavioral health environments
- Guide team members in applying behavioral health design knowledge
- Support research and thought leadership initiatives in behavioral health and justice-related design
