Responsibilities
- Support the Refuge Manager in overseeing daily beach operations, ensuring responsible public access and protection of refuge lands.
- Apply adaptive management practices in line with the organization's Beach Management Plan and state and local coastal and wetland regulations.
- Help recruit, train, and supervise seasonal personnel such as rangers, gatehouse staff, and tour guides.
- Maintain and prepare off-road vehicle trails; manage symbolic fencing and signage to define trail routes and safeguard ecologically sensitive zones.
- Regularly evaluate beach and wildlife conditions and advise on access permissions or restrictions as needed.
- Act as a primary point of contact, delivering timely updates on beach access and conditions to visitors, local residents, and stakeholders through digital and direct communication.
- Assist in managing off-road vehicle permit systems and guided tours to meet visitation and revenue targets.
- Collaborate with management to meet financial goals and improve operational effectiveness.
- Identify necessary staffing, tools, and budgetary resources to ensure a high-quality visitor experience.
- Manage essential databases and operational tools to maintain data integrity and prevent loss.
- Cultivate relationships within the local community to broaden access, engage diverse audiences, and promote inclusivity.
- During non-peak seasons, contribute to educational tours and programming, especially for local youth and nonprofit groups.
- Create and carry out consistent strategies for ongoing community involvement.
- Build genuine local partnerships to strengthen community investment in refuge conservation.
- Work with ecological experts to safeguard rare and endangered species, particularly nesting shorebirds.
- Clearly and professionally communicate and enforce measures to protect wildlife.
- Assist in coordinating logistics for coastal resilience and habitat restoration initiatives with project leads.
- Produce regular reports, documentation, and photo records to support management planning and interdepartmental coordination.
