AECOM is hiring an Associate Director - Data Centres (HV Substation Design) - UK

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical conversations on high-voltage substation design with data centre clients and cross-functional teams, clarifying project boundaries, defining integration points with site power systems such as main switchboards, UPS, and generators, and ensuring cohesive execution
  • Oversee the engineering delivery of HV substation designs for data centre grid interconnections and internal high-voltage networks, aligning methodology with design teams, tracking progress, and reviewing outputs before client submission
  • Apply end-to-end expertise across project phases—from initial grid assessments and conceptual layouts to front-end engineering and detailed design—to create substation solutions that support the high power density and uptime needs of large-scale data centre facilities
  • Collaborate with project managers to establish staffing plans and timelines that align with data centre build schedules and key project milestones
  • Exercise commercial judgment by contributing to bid preparation, tracking project expenditures, and identifying avenues to expand the HV substation scope within existing client frameworks
  • Develop strong relationships with data centre developers, hyperscale operators, and utility providers, gaining insight into their grid interconnection strategies and reliability expectations
  • Promote safety-by-design in all HV substation documentation, ensuring adherence to industry regulations and the unique safety demands of live data centre operations
  • Guide and train early-career engineers to strengthen internal capacity in high-voltage substation design for data centre projects over time
