Responsibilities
- Plan and oversee collection installations and rotations in consultation with the Curator of Photography.
- Coordinate with other gallery departments, manage communications with lenders and external stakeholders, and supervise research assistants or interns.
- Ensure proper care, handling, and display of artworks in the permanent collection.
- Create, organize, and execute exhibitions and publications on photography history, serving as curator for AGO-hosted exhibitions.
- Collaborate with research assistants and internal departments during exhibition planning and production, participating in project teams and content planning forums.
- Coordinate hosted exhibitions by consulting with originating curators, attending production meetings, and overseeing installations.
- Identify and acquire artworks for the permanent collection in consultation with the Curator of Photography, negotiate prices, conduct research, and prepare reports for the Photography Curatorial Committee.
- Prepare documentation for the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB).
- Collaborate with the Curator of Photography and the Photography Curatorial Committee Chairperson to plan, facilitate, and execute effective committee meetings.
- Engage committee members in understanding the artistic and cultural significance of acquisitions and exhibitions, as well as their roles as supporters of the gallery's artistic mission.
- Provide expert advice internally to committees and externally to art collectors and the general public as needed.
- Promote the gallery to local and international art communities and the general public, interacting with scholars, collectors, and critics.
- Lead the AGO International Art Circle group on a domestic or international trip approximately every 12 to 18 months and participate in donor programs as a guest speaker.
- Build and encourage positive relationships with the collector and donor community, art dealers, and auction houses.
- Manage work performance of department staff and interns through hiring, training, scheduling, assigning projects, and monitoring work completion.
- Manage their own work and that of direct reports according to department systems, procedures, applicable collective agreements, and gallery policies on security, administration, human resources, and health and safety.
- Uphold the gallery's values of respect, openness, collaboration, and accountability.
