Responsibilities
- Gather initial case information and verify adherence to jurisdictional requirements; create and file case initiation materials; assign docket numbers; set tracking deadlines for compliance.
- Process and log all motions and related responses; adjudicate motions assigned to the clerk under local rules or internal policies; track resulting actions.
- Conduct legal research and respond to inquiries from judges, courts, attorneys, self-represented litigants, and other parties regarding procedures, case issues, and case status.
- Develop and issue customized briefing schedules based on individual case requirements.
- Accept and examine appellate briefs for conformity with the Sixth Circuit Rules and Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure; notify counsel of defects with clear instructions for correction and track resubmissions.
- Log judicial orders and opinions; distribute them promptly to counsel, parties, and relevant district courts or judges; draft orders as directed by judicial chambers or supervisors.
- Interpret filings submitted by self-represented parties; route documents to appropriate personnel and draft written responses when needed.
- Alert key court staff to emergency motions; request urgent review; monitor until resolution.
- Serve as primary, backup, or setup courtroom deputy to support court proceedings.

Compensation
Compensation ranges from $51,414 to $83,604 (CL 25) or $56,634 to $92,043 (CL 26), based on qualifications per U.S. Court Guidelines. Includes benefits and a work-life balance package with annual leave and hybrid telework options.
